Club News week commencing June 4th..

Our Intermediate Hurlers played Newcastlewest in the second round of the Intermediate Hurling championship on Friday June 1st last in Kilmallock.   Early exchanges were tight with points traded equally in the first ten minutes with the teams two points apiece. However Newcastlewest with the aid of a strong breeze and soft frees were able to open up a five point gap at half time nine points to five. We battled back in the early exchanges of the second half and had the gap reduced to two points. The stop-start nature to the game prevented us from developing any real momentum and our challenge faded. The final score was a cause for confusion amongst the officials but was confirmed as 12 points to 8 in favor of Newcastlewest. All Ballybricken scores came from Michael Wilkinson frees. Unfortunately that ends our involvement in this years championship and the team will now focus on the county cup for the remainder of the summer. Team: Pat McElligott (Capt), Sean Browne, Eoin Lyons, Kevin Ryan, Paul Martin, John McElligott, James Frawley, John Stack, Mark McGuire, Michael Wilkinson, Mark O’Dea, Darragh Martin, Joe Teefy, Liam McElligott , Enda Frawley. Subs: Colm Teefy, Andrew Ryan, Conor Grene, John Casey.

Our U14 footballers played Ballybrown on Wednesday evening last in Caherelly. Despite getting off to a great start racking up 8 points from play  and dominating possession, Ballybrown’s goal towards the end of the half reduced our lead to 3 points and leaving the score at half time 1-2 to 0-8 in our favor. The second half showed a similar trend where we again dominated possession and again built up a strong lead on the scoreboard. However after conceding 2 goals towards the end of the match our buffer was reduced to a single point lead in the dying minutes which resulted in a mail biting finish. Our defense however held strong to secure the deserved win even  though it was by a single pint in the end. Final score: 1-10 to 3-3. Panel: Cillian McCarthy, Liam Nicholl, Sean Teefy, Jamie Doran, James Pinder, Eoin Klosse, Adam McCarthy, Adam Shire, Gearoid Mitchell, Jason Cross, Jack Owens, Eoghan O Neill, Conor Garvey, Dylan Conway, Lewis Rogers, Daniel Owens, James Garvey, Niall Mitchell.

U12 footballers played Claughaun in Claughaun last Thursday May 29th . Missing some of our older players we fielded a very young team and got off to the worst possible start when Claughaun scored a very fortunate goal early in the first half. However Niall Mitchell and Cillian O’Brien then took control in midfield and with Jack Cross, Matthew Pender and Daniel Owens showing well in the forwards we worked our way back into the game, half time score was level 1-2 to 5 points. Claughaun went on the attack early in the second half but our defence performed heroics during this period and Paddy Byrnes, Darragh Hogan and Scott McEvoy did everything in their power to protect their goalie Ryan Hickey who brought off a string of great saves  and we confined the opposition to just 2 points during this period. Mid-way through the half we scored a goal worthy of any occasion following a move that started from our own goal line and was finished in style by Colm O’Riordan after an assist by our youngest player  Aidan Walker to tie the match. Jack Cross then scored a point to put us a point in front but in the last minute Claughaun scored a goal to take the match by 2 points. Despite defeat this was a great performance by this young team: Ryan Hickey , Scott McEvoy, Patrick Byrnes, Darragh Hogan, Daniel Owens, Niall Mitchell, Cillian O’Brien, Jack Cross, Colm O’Riordan, Matthew Pender, Aidan Walker. As our U12 panel is very tight for numbers we would appeal to all parents with players on the panel to encourage them  to attend training and matches we would welcome news players come along  to training Tuesday evenings in Caherelly at 6:30 pm.

Thankyou to Tony Ryan and all the volunteers for having our pitch and facilities  in immaculate condition  for our first Senior Hurling fixture when Hospital played Na Pairsaigh on Saturday evening last which despite the weather conditions went off very well.
